Feeding your Cows More Resourcefully

Without knowing exactly what is in your feed, how can you be sure you are feeding efficiently or cost effectively?  Keeping your cows in optimal shape does not always require more feed; in many cases, it requires feeding less.  Feeding to keep cows in optimal shape, results in higher pregnancy rates and healthier calves, with more vigour at birth, as well as better milk production.  Feeding too little can cost you lower production, while feeding too much ends up as dollars on the manure pile.

Optimizing Stocking Rates

Whether you are under-utilizing or over-utilizing your pastures, you are sacrificing pounds of beef, either now or in the future.  In many situations, stocking rates are too low, yet the pasture is still considered overgrazed.  When cattle continually graze down the tastier grasses and leave the other species, eventually less-palatable grasses to overtake the pasture.

Valuing Manure Accurately

Most producers do not realize the substantial value of their cattle manure.  Treated as a waste disposal problem, rather than one of the most valuable resources on the farm, it is pushed aside and piled up and later spread on the nearest convenient field.  Stored and applied properly, and balanced with the proper soil nutrient program, it will improve crop yields while reducing fertilizer costs, as well as improving long term beneficial microbial activity and soil moisture holding capacity.  It also is another potential revenue stream.

Selling  Smarter

Get the best out of the market by retaining ownership in some of your calves. 

We have 2 options - retained-ownership and retained-interest that allows you to sell some of your calves in the fall, and share in the profits of the others after they are harvested.  This is a great risk-management strategy, as you are able to benefit from cash flow in the fall, and share in the higher selling price at the packing plant.  As an added benefit, all the carcass and feed efficiency data can be fed back into TraceBack^TM to further help you evaluate your cows and bulls.

Knowing your Beef

"From gate to plate" and "from farm to fork" are catch phrases that are picking up steam in recognition of increasing consumer-demand to know where their food is coming from.  Everyone is talking about traceability of food, and the cattle producers, with the introduction of RFID tags, are well positioned to take advantage of this potential growth-opportunity.
